An apology of sorts to dragonvoice (the group)

September 11th, 2005 by Aliera

First, I’d just like to say that I apologize for any offense felt that I am blaming the entire group of Dragonvoice. I recognize that it’s unreasonable to blame them for the actions of one of their members. I do not apologize about the person who contacted me though, who was inexplicably rude about the whole thing.

That having been said, I’d like to say this whole entire thing is not worth anyone’s time. I’ve heard all the variations of scanlation arguments, and in the end everyone just ends up furious and nothing changes. The only difference between two groups doing the same project is that some readers will have to decide on their own whoose releases they want to read, and well, that’s up to them, isn’t it?

I think we should all hold our hands together and figure out where we can find a bowl large enough to hold ramen and me. You know…so I can swim in it and eat it at the same time.

  2. strawberryxness Says:

hehe, yeah! what James says ^^

  3. oken Says:

    behind you 100% oyabin

what difference does it make if another group decides to fansub the same manga? does that imply that you’re so afraid of your own subbing that you’d restrict others from subbing the same manga? fansubbing is done by people that volunteer their time and to have fun while fansubbing. if you’re not subbing for fun, what’s the point?

  5. tyger Says:

Get platy to draw James in ramen :)

    As I said inthe other post, I think it’s a bit of a wasted effort to duplicate projects, but I feel you had the mature response rather than the childish rantage he claims you had. You sounded reasonably calm and collected in contrast to his furious ranting in the conversation. He should have offered a joint. Many groups do a joint starting from like v2 or whereever. I think it’s an innocent mistake if you didn’t know about it, but even then, if you still wanted this project, he should accept it. ^_^;

I just hope DVM would be as mature and update their first page.

    My personal opinion:
This is the -who knows how many- times I’ve seen a scanlation group trowing tantrums over project-claiming.
How come anime fansubbers could have bigger heart what with some fansubber groups tackling similar certain anime and -not- lunging to each other neck.
I was in scanlation & fansub world for quite some times, but this certain case still amused me.
It’s scanslation. If there’s one person you should ask permission, to do something on the manga, it’s the creator/mangaka, who would be thrilled over fans-translations but not over scanslation actually.
    Yet, it’s a net-fans-world. Illegal, non-provit, but still fun fannish-habit.
We we should just keep the low profile & stuff right? *shrug* Make it work, be civil & mature about it.

The funny thing is, Saki Hiwatari-sensei’s works usually promote peace. Being the fans, shouldn’t we at least try to follow her example?

Being unbiased, I saw Inane taking care of this problem in calm & mature sense while DVM was not. Such is a pity.

Anyway, I would read *both* works, because I appreciate both efforts. Plus, I do have the original manga, because I want to appreciate the mangaka too and have sent couples of mails to her through her publisher to express my feelings toward her works.
So I aggree, that which ever groups want to work on the project doesn’t really matter.

Support the mangaka. That’s the most important.

    Peace.

    ~ Dan

Please pardon the many typos in my previous post, I tried to use the correct grammar but English isn’t my native language so mistakes still often appearing.

  9. Washan Says:

I full heartedly agree with Dan here. The only one who should care is the mangaka, whos work we are translating. Everyone has their own opinion on who to support, and that is fine, but without the original these subs wouldn’t be happening. I also collect both (the originals and fan-subs) because of this. And Dan, don’t worry about the spelling mistakes, mine probably isn’t much better and I am a native speaker/writer of english.

YAY~~ this is resolved!! ^-^ well, kinda, anyway ^^” we manga/anime lovers gotta stick TOGETHER!! >O

I didn’t even know a “scanlator code of ethics” even exists (though I do know about the projects dropping as soon as they’re licensed in Canada/USA for obvious reasons), much less know that fansubbing groups can claim exclusive rights on a “first-come, first-serve” basis. Hmm… Learn something new (and stupid) everyday. I honestly hope the other members do not agree with that guy. Just doesn’t make sense to me. I enjoy the “choice-system” Aliera has described, as we’re supposed to be a huge community that shouldn’t have a competitive environment.

  12. WanderingGummiOfDoom Says:

@_@ the site is so pretty now… its like.. pretty…. its like i never even lived her before…but yes… scanlators code of ethics!… *scoff* technically we are doing something boarderline illegal here so what about the ethics and morals talk there.

  13. makenshi Says:

dan is the man. XD i agree with what he said.
though it does seem pointless to have two different scanlations of the same manga. personally i’d rather just read one work…but choosing…that’s hard to make, i think. a joint is the best solution

  14. ghostjung Says:

I can understand where DV comes from about the whole “stealing project”, yet the way that they had handled it could have been much better. It’s an embarrassment that the log was even posted, which indicates who was the immature one.

Joints are very difficult, especially when there has been an argument between the groups before. I do agree that having two different scanlations of the same manga is pointless, but if one does it in a better quality or is released faster, then it’s really just a matter of what the readers want.

The scanlation world is just too politic for just a hobby. So, as a member of a scanlation group myself, I hope others can appreciate the amount of conflict and effort the scanlators have to deal and put up with. ;) Cheers.

  15. z.a Says:

I agree with ghostjung about this situation, but I think it’s important to emphasize that i don’t think Riseabove77 represented DV as a group when she approached Aliera in that manner, although it clearly came across as that when she introduced herself.
It’s true that “the way that they had handled it could have been much better” but i’m pretty sure that riseabove77 didn’t consult anyone in the group before rushing off to yell at Aliera. I know for a fact that the founder of DV was sleeping during all of this, and woke up to a nasty argument with no idea how and what had happened. And i know that the founder wouldn’t have approaced Aliera as Riseabove77 did.

as a comment to Dan: you wrote that “Being unbiased, I saw Inane taking care of this problem in calm & mature sense while DVM was not. Such is a pity.” again, as Aliera wrote in her post, DV as a group shouldn’t be blamed for the actions of one single member. but by going public about the argument, Aliera involved the whole group which is quite a pity since it’s the leaders of DV that has to deal with the whole mess now.

Although Aliera quite clearly has stated that she doesn’t blame DV as a group for the action of one of their members, people still adress this issue as an issue between DV and Inane and not, as it should be, Riseabove77 and Inane.
I just think that this distinction is very important!

  17. strawberryxness Says:

um..i thought we were past this…

  18. riseabove77 Says:

This is really getting out of hand. This was a personal issue that was made public by inane. I already apologized for the delivery. I will not apologize for the intent. Let’s get past this. I asked Inane, twice, to take down the post before I posted the update on the DV website. ZA, I don’t know where you get your information, but DV was behind me 100% and if you tell me who you really are, I would appreciate it so I can confront the right people and get to the truth, or at least tell me who your sources are. I told Inane that I would post something of my own if they didn’t take it down. I have told them over and over again that I would take it down and consider the issue resolved if they would take that slanderous blog down. They did not. They said they would “think about it.” Sensoring the group name doesn’t cut it. Everyone had already read the blog. It’s like saying you’re sorry after you trip someone on purpose. I posted that log knowing I looked like a ranting bitch because I think the truth is very important. I had already spoken to another Inane op previous to that who denied all knowledge of Himawari and who laughed at me the entire time, so I was already in a mood. Also, it is clearly evident that Aliera stopped talking to me. If she had issues, she should have addressed it in the PM. I would have preferred to resolve this in a private manner. Like I said before, this gang mentality sucks, for lack of a better word, and you should allow Aliera to fight her own battles. And this doesn’t even touch on the heart of the matter: Inane started doing a project that DV had already been scanlating for 5 months. I never said I owned anything. But it would have been common courtesy to at least discuss it with us. Instead they waited until they had two chapters to release so that they can get ahead of us without knowing their intent. That’s the last I will say on this issue. I’ve been touched and amazed at the support I have gotten from other groups on this. What goes on in this blog is not at all indicative of what goes on in the scanlating world. Many people said cruel and hurtful things in this blog, but, you know, I can’t let it bother me because I have the support of my peers. I did nothing I wouldn’t do over again. And for your information, I never wanted Inane to drop the project. I wanted them to admit they had committed a wrong. Maybe my defnition of wrong is different from all of yours, but there it is. We have been offerred a joint. It’s up to the administrators whether they take it or not. I have declined to offer my opinion, even though it has been solicited. I would rather drop the project. There is no sense in wasting our time when Inane is already ahead of us. Leechers won’t care about the quality, since they are both HQ. There is no sense in two teams who do qulaity work to release the same project. It quickly becomes a waste of time and meaningless competition. Leechers will read what comes out first. I also need to say that I have spoken to a lot of very nice people at Inane (you know who I mean) and I appreciate your efforts to smooth things over.

  19. JMak Says:

wow…. u ppl should just stop ranting publicly and solve it without having to have all this argument….. we, as readers, just hope that you can solve this peacefully and keep the scanlations coming with the great job that you’ve all done before this fiasco. let’s not talk about who’s immature and who’s not. to some degree, we ALL are immature. That’s it. i’m out

  20. Mailenstein Says:

    @riseabove77
Welcome to the scanslation-world. That happens day by day. Come over it already and stop whining. I wonder who opened up the Kindergarten-door……

  21. Mailenstein Says:

P.S. I’m still laughing “Ahahahahaha” XD. SO hilarious! *continues laughing* “..hahahahahaha~”
